Tourist information - Darwin
Darwin, formerly Port Darwin is a city in north-central Australia, it is the capital and chief port of the Northern Territory, on Clarence Strait, opposite Melville Island. The city has an excellent harbor and is the terminus of a railroad that runs north to south; it also has an international airport which is 6km north of the town centre. Darwin is closer to Jakarta than it is to Sydney, and closer to Singapore than it is to Melbourne. Asian influence is therefore as noticeable here as Australian.
A 1486-km highway runs from Darwin south to Alice Springs and Adelaide. Northern Territory University (1989) is in a suburb of Darwin. Darwin also serves as a gateway to Kakadu National Park, which lies 247 km to the east. Darwin was founded in 1869 as Palmerston and renamed Darwin in 1911.
